Much to everyone’s surprise André Rieu was there, Sunday afternoon, May 13th 2018, to open the
fifth Q Music Duck Race in Maastricht. As a special guest he dumped thousands of ducklings into the Jeker
river, by pushing a button. The Duck Race is organized every year by the Round Table 174 Maastricht.
Ducks can be bought for five euros. The proceeds go to benefit charity. The yellow plastic ducks are
marked with numbers and swim a set course in the Jeker river, which runs through the Maastricht city park.
The duck which crosses the finish line first is the winner. There are also larger (and more expensive)
Business Ducks are launched during a second race. The charities of this year are the Refugee Project
Maastricht and the Animals Faith Foundation.

After the count down the ducks are dumped into the water from a higher scaffold. Food and drinks are
available, the profits are also for charity. In his speech the reporter refers to the Eurovision Songcontest
which took place the day before. He said: “the winning song of the Eurovision songcontest 2018 (Israel)
was about a singing chicken, but we have a lot of ducks, which is much nicer”.
